According to former India player - Javagal Srinath, it is not easy to compare teams and players from different generation. But he chooses his openers for the One-Day dream team in the form of Saeed Anwar and Sachin Tendulkar.
While historian Mukul Kesavan said, "I also thought of Saeed Anwar and then who would not. But my openers for the ODI dream team would be Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar.
With both Srinath and Kesavan selecting Sachin Tendulkar as common candidate as one of the two openers, the CNN-IBN's sports editor Gaurav Kalra asked Kesavan, "You dropped Saeed Anwar from the team - the guy who has got highest individual score against India in a One-Day game. So, is that the reason?
"No, that is not the reason. In fact, I penciled him in initially but as an Indian you are used to watching Saeed Anwar kill you but I thought that Ganguly has figured so largely in our

"To some extend and I think that point is extremely valid. You bowl to Sourav Ganguly in the nets and you bowl to Saeed Anwar in a match. And Saeed is a versatile player. He can take any team apart and if you see his overall performance on all kinds of wickets, I think he is just outstanding. Sourav, yes, statistics prove that he has done well and surely Mukul has a point that the partnership of Sachin-Souarv has done a lot good but stats gives you a lot of information but then it hides also a lot. And of the two, in terms of pure cricket, I would like to go with Saeed Anwar.
Next Javagal Srinath choose his three middle-order batsmen - Javed Miandad, Yuvraj Singh and Inzamam-ul-Haq, while Kesavan said, "My one down batsman is Zaheer Abbas, two down would be Javed Miandad and three down would be Mohammad Azaruddin."

The other name which could be very close to him could be Yousuf Youhana - Mohammad Yousuf, I meant. The other one is definitely Rahul Dravid but I would like to keep Dravid down the order rather."
"Zaheer Abbas is a questionable selection, who has played only 60-odd One-Day games. Why did you pick him?" asked Gaurav Kalra to Kesavan.
To which Kesavan answered, "I think it is questionable only because Zaheer did not play as much of One-Day cricket because he was essentially a person from an era where you had only one kind of an international cricket - Test cricket. But if you look at his figures and in fact, it is not just his figures but I can actually remember the kind of innings he used to play. He was an astonishing ODI batsman. He scored seven centuries in just 60-odd games. The stats for Inzamam, whereas is 13 centuries in 380 games."
"But probably there is a school of thought that Inzamam batted a little too lower down the order but Srinath, you have gone for yet another interesting selection and that of Yuvraj Singh. But don't you think it is a little too early for him in his young career to have making it into a dream team - India and Pakistan and that too over Rahul Dravid?," asked Gaurav Kalra.
"Rahul will miss out very narrowly and it is a very hard decision that I have made. And I am sure that Sourav and Rahul will definitely not like me for this. But in the last 6-7 years of cricket, I have never seen anyone who can so brutally attack the opponent and the force with which he takes the game into the opponents, nobody has done it till today.
“And I would go by the winning rates - the way he would structure the innings. Gaurav Kalra asked Srinath, "Do you think Kapil Dev would bat higher up the order than Imran and Imran will get the first choice with the new ball?"
Srinath said, "We will have to go a little down the order to see who the third seamer is and again probably take it from there. Again I have Wasim Akram down the order. And in that case, Wasim can come in as first change with Imran and Kapil opening with the news ball or you can bring in some variety and bring in Imran or Kapil as the first change.

It doesn't make a difference as Kapil can really move the ball well. So, probably with the new ball I would like Kapil opening the innings with Imran and Wasim coming in a little later.

"The reason for that is simple. There have been a lot of good wicketkeepers for India and Pakistan but if you look at sheer brutal batting ability in the One-Day era, one has to take him," said Kesavan.
Even Srinath agreed with the decision, saying, "Somebody with real brutal force is Dhoni and I really like his maturity at a very young age. And that has gone a long way, in being him in the side."
Srinath then went on with his choice of three bowlers and he asked, "Gaurav, if you are picking an India-Pakistan A side, then I would probably put my name there. Anyway, my three bowlers would be Wasim Akram, Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh."
While, Kesavan said, "I have no Indian bowlers here at all. All are Pakistanis. They are Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Saqlain Mushtaq.
Gaurav asked Srinath, "Waqar Younis has a wonderful strike-rate and has 400-odd wickets in just over 262 matches. How could you leave him out?"
Srinath said, "If you ask me that is probably the worst selection I have made. But if you go by the logic - then my explanation for leaving out Waqar is - You need three bowlers and I think Kapil Dev, Wasim Akram and Imran Khan would definitely do the job but on different wickets you cannot go with four fast blowers, you also need couple of spinners. And with Imran and Kapil forming the order on the slots and also with Wasim Akram batting, that would give the captain the flexibility to go with two spinners. So, it gives you an option to go with five bowlers.
Then Gaurav asked Kesavan, "You choose Saqlain even though Harbhajan has a superior record but do you think that Saqlain is better ODI bowler?"
Kesavan said, "I am not sure that Harbhajan does have the superior record. Maybe, in terms of a number of wickets but if you look at a period and even proportionately now, there is no question that Saqlain has the better record, it is not that his career tailed off very rapidly but even with a tailed-off career, he has a magnificent ODI career."
Gaurav asked Srinath, "You played a lot against Saqlain. Was he really comparable to Harbhajan, who takes his wickets at 34?"
Srinath justified, "You need to look at the longevity of a player. And how long can you play the game is an important ingredient in selecting the side. Same with Waqar Younis - I think his strike-rate at the initial stages was tremendous but if you see the later half of his career, maybe the last 6 years of his career, maybe he wasn't that effective and those values doesn't just match the figures of his first 6 years of cricket. With Harbhajan Singh, I can see a growing stature and at the same time Saqlain Mushtaq has finished almost his career.

Gaurav asked Srinath, "Waqar Younis has a wonderful strike-rate and has 400-odd wickets in just over 262 matches. How could you leave him out?"
Srinath said, "If you ask me that is probably the worst selection I have made. But if you go by the logic - then my explanation for leaving out Waqar is - You need three bowlers and I think Kapil Dev, Wasim Akram and Imran Khan would definitely do the job but on different wickets you cannot go with four fast blowers, you also need couple of spinners. And with Imran and Kapil forming the order on the slots and also with Wasim Akram batting, that would give the captain the flexibility to go with two spinners. So, it gives you an option to go with five bowlers.
Then Gaurav asked Kesavan, "You choose Saqlain even though Harbhajan has a superior record but do you think that Saqlain is better ODI bowler?"
Kesavan said, "I am not sure that Harbhajan does have the superior record. Maybe, in terms of a number of wickets but if you look at a period and even proportionately now, there is no question that Saqlain has the better record, it is not that his career tailed off very rapidly but even with a tailed-off career, he has a magnificent ODI career."
Gaurav asked Srinath, "You played a lot against Saqlain. Was he really comparable to Harbhajan, who takes his wickets at 34?"
Srinath justified, "You need to look at the longevity of a player. And how long can you play the game is an important ingredient in selecting the side. Same with Waqar Younis - I think his strike-rate at the initial stages was tremendous but if you see the later half of his career, maybe the last 6 years of his career, maybe he wasn't that effective and those values doesn't just match the figures of his first 6 years of cricket. With Harbhajan Singh, I can see a growing stature and at the same time Saqlain Mushtaq has finished almost his career.
But Harbhajan may perform in the next 5-6 years, so, that is the reason and in terms of effectiveness and variety, I still feel that Harbhajan is at par with Saqlain. Maybe with Saqlain and Harbhajan both at their peaks, maybe Saqlain would have got the nod but in a long run, I would definitely pick Harbhajan Singh."
